Leadership – Scholarship – Service

The National Honor Society is a prestigious organization predicated on service to the school and community by students who exhibit the highest standards of leadership, scholarship and service. Those students inducted into the organization must have demonstrated leadership, scholarship and service throughout their high school matriculation and be willing to continue that service through their graduation from SHHS.

The NHS standards are high. Each potential candidate (Junior or Senior) must achieve and maintain a 3.6 or higher GPA, have participated in service-oriented activities within school or the community, and demonstrated leadership through school or community activities. Additionally, each student must be in good standing with no current adverse administrative or legal restrictions. Following the completion and submission of student activity information packets and letters of recommendation, a Faculty Council then meets to decide which students have sufficient merit to be inducted into the organization. During this selection process, the student’s identity is withheld from the Faculty Council to ensure complete anonymity and to remove any potential bias. Candidates then participate in a formal Candle Lighting Induction Ceremony in November before family and friends.

The application process is a follows: 1) During the 1st full week of September a letter will be given to all juniors and seniors with a 3.6 or higher GPA. 2) Students who are interested in applying need to attend one of the two mandatory meetings listed in the letters. 3) Studetns will have until the beginning of October to complete the application. 4) Students who are NOT selected for NHS will be notified.

Among the service activities for NHS are going to put together care packages for soldiers over seas. This fall semester we sent over 150 cards to soldiers overs seas through Operation Graditutde. During the spring semester we plan to help with the Life Skills dance and the school sponsored blood drive in April.

Students are required to complete 10 hours of community service each school year. They may earn 5 of those 10 hours over the summer break. Here is the form students must fill out for each volunteer experience:
